Swedish Trial (Folkesson, J Clin Oncol 2005; DOI: 10.1200/JCO.2005.08.144)

Patients with stage I to III rectal cancer were randomized to surgery ± neoadjuvant RT consisting of 25 Gy in five fractions over 1 week, delivered within a week of surgery. The addition of neoadjuvant RT improved locoregional recurrence (9% vs. 26%), predominantly for more distal tumors, cancer-specific survival (72% vs. 62%), and overall survival (38% vs. 30%). Surgery was not a total mesorectal excision (TME).
